An Irish Prepaid MasterCard with no surcharges or monthly feesPosted by: Dave on Jan 11, 2010 |

My previous blog post about the Ruby Card prompted some discussion about the benefits of prepaid cards when the fees associated with administering the card can be very high. On most of the cards, you pay to load your card with money and you pay when you make a purchase.
The Dublin City Gift Card recently came to my attention. This Prepaid MasterCard was launched on December 02 2009 by the Dublin City Business Association and is operated by Zapa through MasterCard. This card makes a great alternative to the existing prepaid cards as it does not have any surcharges or monthly fees.
The card can be purchased at Ticketmaster kiosks in St Stephen’s Green, Dundrum and Jervis shopping centres, and also at a booth in the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre. Late last year we reported that Ryanair were dropping Visa Electron as their free payment method and replacing it with Prepaid Mastercard. At the time there were no free prepaid cards in the Irish Market but the Dublin City Card will allow consumers to avoid transaction charges when booking flights with Ryanair.

This could be a good option to avoid Ryanair booking charges, but I'd like to see confirmation that Ryanair will accept it - they are notorious about being restrictive on what constitutes their "free" card type.
ALso, note that the max that can be loaded on this card is €150 - so if booking for flights above this amount, it will not be an option (Ryanair do not support split tenders, so you cannot use more than one card to pay).

It does work and i think it is worth looking into but if you are in Cork the credit Union there offer a better card - no charges - and you can lodge as much as you want (so it appears) www.bishopstowncu.ie
