The Magento Story - Roy RubinPosted by Dave in web development , magento , e-commerce |
MixEnergy interview Roy Rubin, the guy behind that company the created Magento. Roy talks about how he launched the company Varien as a student and was doing consulting work. He built the business initially by servicing osCommerce clients and getting traffic from Google AdWords. Eventually they landed a large client (as a result of a 50c AdWord), who is still their largest client to date. The income received from this client allows them to build Magento. They decided to build Magento because they found that the existing platforms such as osCommerce were not able to fulfill the needs of their clients.
Roy discusses the future plans for Magento and in particular their Magento Connect Platform. Currently this is an extenions platform that lists over 850 extensions that have been contributed by 3rd parties, both commerical and non commerical.
The interesting point made by Roy is that Magento Connect 2.0 will be a transaction based system. It will allow 3rd parties to upload extensions that can be certified by Magento. It will also have the ability to handle payment transactions and route the funds to the appropriate parties with Magento possibly taking a percentage of the transaction.
You can find the interview video on the MixEnergy website and they also provide an audio only version in mp3 format.
